In-Office Balloon Sinuplasty Q & A

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that opens inflamed sinuses. It’s less invasive than traditional sinus surgery, but can be just as effective at relieving your symptoms of chronic sinusitis. It does not involve the removal of any bone or tissue from the nose. You recover quickly and can return to normal activities shortly after the procedure.

Who is a Good Candidate for Balloon Sinuplasty?

The doctors at Southern ENT Associates carefully evaluate your symptoms and sinus condition before recommending balloon sinuplasty. Typical candidates have the following symptoms, however:

  • Chronic sinus infections that don’t respond to medication or other treatments
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose
  • Chronic nasal problems
  • Headaches around the eyes

What Happens During Balloon Sinuplasty?

During the balloon sinuplasty procedure, your doctor inserts a small, flexible balloon catheter into your sinus passages to open the blocked passageways and facilitate drainage. Once the catheter is in place, the doctor inflates it to expand the sinus opening and sprays saline into the inflamed passages to flush out infected pus and mucus. When the removal of the catheter is complete, your sinuses remain open.

Balloon sinuplasty is an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day. You may be under general anesthesia, but Southern ENT Associates also offers a convenient, in-office version performed under local anesthesia.

How Effective is Balloon Sinuplasty?

This procedure is hugely successful in relieving chronic sinusitis. Research shows that in a study of 1,036 people who underwent balloon sinuplasty, 95% of patients reported improved sinus symptoms for at least nine months post-procedure, and other research shows the benefits last for at least two years. Studies show that 95% of patients who have the procedure would recommend it to their family and friends

Balloon sinuplasty is superior to other sinus surgeries as it involves no cutting of bone or tissue. You have no blood loss or sutures and minimal risk of infection. The recovery and results are fast and effective.
